Supervises the daily activities of Correctional Officers and supports the secure, orderly operation of an adult or juvenile correctional facility. Ensures compliance with safety protocols, security policies, and inmate/youth management procedures. May be assigned to supervise various operational functions within the institution
Works under the direction of a Correctional Lieutenant with moderate supervision and limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Performs routine supervisory duties in the custody, care, and control of inmates/youth and in the direction of correctional officers assigned to a specific shift or post. Coordinates officer activities and ensures appropriate post coverage and staff accountability. Conducts physical counts of inmates/youth and reconciles any discrepancies in population tracking. Supervises searches at internal control points, conducts random and targeted area inspections, and oversees inmate/youth pat-downs and cell searches for contraband. Trains and mentors lower-ranking officers on institutional procedures, safety standards, and operational expectations. Monitors officer performance to ensure duties are carried out in compliance with departmental policy. Maintains order and discipline within assigned areas and supports the enforcement of institutional rules. Assists with documentation of incidents, data collection, and report writing. May provide basic emergency aid such as CPR or first aid and assists with evacuations and area lockdowns. Communicates relevant shift information to staff and supervisors to maintain situational awareness and operational continuity.
Knowledge of correctional institution operations, including inmate/youth custody, security procedures, and institutional discipline. Knowledge of inmate/youth behavior patterns, communication tactics, and threat indicators. Knowledge of riot response, crowd control techniques, and emergency containment strategies. Knowledge of departmental policies, facility rules, and applicable laws governing inmate/youth supervision. Knowledge of basic arithmetic and data collection techniques for reporting and accountability. Skill in the use of firearms, chemical agents, and restraining devices in accordance with policy and training standards. Ability to direct, coordinate, and evaluate the work of correctional officers in assigned areas. Ability to train and guide lower-ranking staff in daily tasks and institutional policies. Ability to observe inmate/youth behavior and assess potential threats or policy violations. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, supervisors, and inmates/youth. Ability to counsel, advise, and direct inmates/youth in accordance with facility rules and rehabilitative goals. Ability to plan and organize daily work assignments while maintaining shift coverage and operational readiness. Ability to describe incidents and events clearly and accurately in written reports. Ability to apply institutional rules, security procedures, and emergency protocols effectively. Ability to maintain composure and make sound decisions in high-stress or dangerous situations. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and resolve conflicts professionally. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, and supervisors. Ability to collect, record, and interpret data related to inmate/youth activity and institutional operations.
Must be an officer in compliance and certified with Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) or must obtain this certification within the required timeframe established by the hiring agency. Some positions require completion of the Correctional Officer Basic Certification Course and completion of the Correctional Officer Supervisory Course or completion of both courses within the required timeframe established by the hiring agency after placement into the position. Incumbents may be required to fulfill all South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Board requirements for law enforcement certification. Some positions require a commercial driver's license.
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
