General Nature of Work

Provides clinical services in preventive, restorative and curative dentistry or directs a dental facility or statewide program.

Examples of Work

Performs professional clinical services either in a permanent or mobile dental unit. Provides dental services to patients, including oral surgery, operative dentistry, oral medicine, periodontal treatment and prosthetics. Plans and supervises work of dentists and technical and clinical personnel in an assigned program of dental health. Conducts examinations, screens patients and gathers data for projects. Presents dental health education programs by lecture or demonstration. Manages budget, administrative services and scheduling for a dental facility or clinic. Develops and conducts special research projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of dentistry. Knowledge of current developments in the field of dentistry. Knowledge of recent developments and pertinent federal and state laws, rules and regulations dentistry Skill in oral operative techniques and in making artificial dentures, crown plates and bridgework. Ability to apply improved techniques and procedures in all phases of dentistry. Ability to prepare and present instruction in oral hygiene and prophylaxis. Ability to communicate effectively.

Special Requirements

Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice dentistry in South Carolina.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited dental school and dental experience.
