General Nature of Work

Manages a unit in a large, complex electronic data processing environment; directs the central operating systems, communications network, production control and related technical support.

Examples of Work

Directs the scheduling of data processing to ensure maximum efficiency. Coordinates the administrative and management functions of a large, diversified operations section. Manages the tape library system, systems security, electronic space allocation, purchasing and inventory control. Directs production processing activities associated with voice and data communications; reviews new applications and project impact on existing resources; analyzes production trends and goals. Directs feasibility studies of complex and diversified systems for an operating system with multiple information technology applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of information technology capabilities, equipment and practices. Knowledge of activities related to voice and data communications, computer operations, word processing and tape library management. Ability to prepare technical and nontechnical reports in a clear and concise manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Requirements

An associate degree with experience in computer operations or programming, plus specialized training in the development and maintenance of operating systems or a related data processing field. Related experience may be substituted for the required associate's degree on a year-for-year basis.
