Provides assistance and guidance in the use, selection, and user training of hardware and software systems. Provides technical advice in the design of voice and data networks and the operations of network control centers.
This class is intended for use at the journey level. Some positions in this class may have supervisory responsibilities.
Supervises and coordinates the planning for network control center activities. Provides advice and direction to agency on purchases of hardware and software; conducts feasibility studies; collects survey data and compiles and produces survey results; presents written recommendations to management. Provides technical advice to management concerning office automation needs, micro and mini-computers, voice and data networks and mainframe interfacing. Designs hardware configurations and installs hardware. Performs planning, design and evaluations relative to communication networking and operations layouts. Coordinates operation of system; monitors system storage; maintains all system documentation; monitors all system maintenance; maintains records of equipment and replacement plan. Serves as user contact for problems with automation system; follows through with solutions to problems; trains users and staff. Advises agency committees. Applies state-of-the-art technology to meet and improve network control center. Conducts interviews to determine user needs. Meets with vendors to discuss and evaluate software packages. Trains users in the proper utilization of hardware and software; writes training manuals.
Knowledge of network services and data communications. Knowledge of methods of network design and equipment configuration requirements. Knowledge of office automation systems, information processing operations, fiber optics, micro/minicomputer hardware/software and multiplexers as they relate to the latest trends in voice and data networks connectivity. Knowledge of computer system analysis, design, testing, debugging and maintenance techniques. Ability to train, direct and coordinate work of subordinate personnel. Ability to present technical and non-technical reports in a clear and concise manner. Ability to establish effective working relationships with vendors, management staff and users.
A high school diploma and experience in office automation systems, data communications system design, installation, operation, repair, sales or marketing, or processing of information in a data processing environment. An associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in computer science or related area may be substituted for the required work experience.
