Plans and directs the development, testing, maintenance, modification, installation and use of operating system software; serves as a technical consultant or as an expert-level programmer.
This class is intended for positions that provide leadership and direction to other staff or function as technical experts.
Determines requirements of operating systems. Conducts feasibility studies. Performs system analysis to determine equipment configurations. Provides technical guidance to other staff. Reviews technical releases and determines if new features can meet current needs. Installs and tests data base management systems. Maintains system integrity and compliance with standards. Allocates and maintains disk space. Tunes system for optimum operating efficiency.
Knowledge of system software testing and debugging. Knowledge of operating systems, data base management systems, assemblers, utility programs, monitors, compilers and mini/micro computers. Knowledge of data base structures, data security, system integrity and monitoring and auditing activities. Knowledge of in-house operating systems. Knowledge of methods for determining equipment configurations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to coordinate the activities of a technical staff. Ability to identify and resolve problems. Ability to establish effective working relationships with vendors, staff members and users.
A high school diploma and experience in the modification and maintenance of system programs, the design and development of system software or the testing and debugging of system software.A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field may be substituted for required work experience.
