The state's classification and compensation system has four pay structures. Each of the four pay structures comprises pay grades and state salary ranges for each pay grade. The four structures are General, Clinical, Certified Law Enforcement and Technology.

Effective Feb. 1, 2026, the institutions of higher education classification and compensation system changed to four pay structures, replacing the previous ten pay bands for higher education classified employees. In addition, both state agencies and institutions of higher education have unclassified state titles.
